At Drum Major Empowerment, we believe that the opportunity to obtain higher education is important. We want to assist in making that possible through the Drum Major Instinct Scholarship Award, in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About The Scholarship

On February 4,1968, just two months before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, he delivered “The Drum Major Instinct”  sermon in Atlanta, Georgia.  In this message, he described being a Drum Major, or leader, for positive change. We want to support you as you further your education and make a positive difference in the world. We will award two (2) $500 scholarships to students attending an accredited post secondary institution. 


1) Must be accepted to a U.S. accredited university, college, or vocational training program for the Summer or Fall 2022 semester. 

2) Must have participated or are currently participating in a student organization. 

3) Application, including essay, must be submitted by April 15, 2022. 

How to Apply

To be considered for the Drum Major Instinct Scholarship Award, you must complete the form below and provide a response to the following question (maximum of 500 words).

  • How will you use your education and experience participating in student activities to contribute to your community?

Submissions will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. ET on January 17, 2022 until 11:59 p.m., ET, on April 15, 2022.

Applicants must provide proof of acceptance as scholarship awards will be made directly to an institution. 


  • Applicants will be reviewed and selected by the DME Scholarship committee based on eligibility criteria. Scholarship recipients will be randomly selected from the qualified finalists. 
  • Not all applicants will receive a scholarship. 
  • Scholarships are a 1-time award. 
  • Awardees will be notified by email when the funds have been dispersed to the institution.
